DMYTRO PAVLYCHKO: PLANNED AND REALIZED

Abstract

There are numerous methodologies currently employed in Ukrainian literary studies. Let us list only those most widely used today: descriptive, hermeneutic, comparative-typological, and the methodology of archetypal criticism. A literary scholar’s choice of tools is dictated primarily by the characteristics and specific nature of literary texts. For this reason, the memoirs of writers who lived and worked during the Soviet era lend themselves best to analysis using the methods, techniques and tools of postcolonial methodology. In general, postcolonial studies are ‘a collection of methodologically diverse, thematically related academic studies that emerged during the collapse of colonial systems and the realisation of the rupture between national culture (literature) and leading Western models’ [2, p. 252]. Therefore, when applying the methodology of postcolonial criticism to Dmytro Pavlychko’s memoirs, it would not be wrong to draw upon the work of Y. Malaniuk, M. Shlemkevych, D. Dontsov and V. Lypynsky, rather than relying solely on contemporary literary scholars and political scientists.
