Abstract

The article examines the functional-semantic and stylistic features of nominal one-member constructions, in particular the varieties of nominative structures — the nominative of representation and the nominative of theme in the Ukrainian and Polish languages.

Relevance of the study is обусловлена the lack of a unified interpretation of the status of nominative constructions in modern linguistics, as well as the need to clarify their functional differentiation, especially in the context of Ukrainian–Polish contrastive analysis and the expansion of their use across different functional styles.

Aim of the study is to identify the functional, semantic, stylistic, and intonational features of the nominative of representation and the nominative of theme, as well as to determine their common and distinctive characteristics in Ukrainian and Polish.

Methodology is based on a combination of descriptive, functional, and contrastive methods. Elements of contextual analysis are also employed to determine the role of the analyzed constructions in literary, journalistic, and academic texts.

Scientific novelty lies in уточненні the status of the nominative of representation and the nominative of theme as types of segmented constructions, in revealing their functional heterogeneity, and in providing a systematic comparison of Ukrainian and Polish equivalents (in particular, with sentence equivalents and informatives). Their different communicative nature is substantiated: expressive and imagery-based (nominative of representation) versus informative and organizational (nominative of theme).

Practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of applying its results in courses on Ukrainian and Polish syntax, in teaching Ukrainian and Polish as foreign languages, as well as in the practice of analyzing literary and journalistic texts. The findings may also be useful for compiling textbooks and teaching materials and for further research in functional syntax.
