Abstract

The article examines the linguistic-axiological and linguistic-pragmatic features of the quality category in the German advertising discourse of the first third of the 20th century. It was found that quality appears not only as a characteristic of the product, but also as a central communicative factor performing axiological, semiotic, pragmatic and sociocultural and cognitive– mental functions. It has been proven that in advertising messages, quality serves as a marker of trust and prestige, acquires the status of a mythological sign, provides a motivational influence on the consumer and reflects the social transformations of the industrial age. Linguistic representation of quality as a category is realized through evaluative vocabulary, grammatical forms of intensification and stylistic means that form a positive image of the product, its reliability and durability in the mind of the addressee. As a result, quality functions as a complex mental-generating category that combines economic pragmatics with cultural expectations and not only acts as a key element of communication between the producer and the consumer, but is also extrapolated into the space of collective self-awareness.
