The issues of selecting energy-efficient modes of operation of gas transmission systems operating in conditions of partial load are considered. It is shown that only criterion for the optimality of the regime should be considered the minimum energy consumption for gas transportation. It is proposed to divide gas costs for transport into fuel gas which compensates for energy consumption in linear sections, and process gas, which serves to maintain the pressure in the pipeline. Increasing the volume of process gas leads to reduction in energy consumption for transport i.e. to reduce the volume of fuel gas, therefore, the total gas consumption has minimum, which corresponds to the optimal mode. An assessment of the accuracy of determining the mass of process gas in the linear part of the pipeline according to the parameters of the operating mode, the influence of hydraulic efficiency, operating pressure, and gas temperature is estimated.
