FAMILY NOVEL-CHRONICAL GENRE TRADITION: SPECIFICS OF NOVEL THINKING

The article deals with the study of the family novel-chronical tradition in the Ukrainian literature, represented by the works of Hr. Kvitka-Osnovianenko, A. Svydnyts’kyi, U. Samchuk, O. Storozhenko, Iryna Vil’de, Yu. Kosach. It also observes the development of this kind of novel tradition in the World literature. The paper researches theoretical aspects, highlights the specifics of historicism and peculiarities of the linear plot structure.
Family novel, as a special novel form, attracts particular scientific attention and has already gained meaningful tradition both in the Ukrainian and World Literature. In literary studies to define family novel-chronicle scientists use such terms, as “family novel”, “family chronicle”, “epic”, “family epic”, “generational novel”. However, we think the most accurate term that expresses genre particularities of such kind of novel form is “family novel-chronical”. Its central theme is a family decline. In addition, most authors of this type of works constantly make attempts to transform the genre into its more modern forms using mythological paradigms, psychologism and fragmentation, preserving the ancient traditions of a novel. We consider the family theme and its all possible projections to be the main constant features of the genre, among them: family’s formation, unification anddisintegration. The specificity of the chronotope of this type is movement, change of generations in the context of a certain historical era, that is the historical period is depicted through the prism of life of a particular individual.
Characteristic features of this kind of novel or sequence of novels we consider to be the combination of an individual life story and a story of the whole society. The specificity of the novel thinking in the genre of family novel-chronical is to depict the regularities of social and historical changes that are manifested in the formation of a hero, singularities of his social life and psychology.
