The article is dedicated to the study of the poetics, stylistics, and genre architecture of the anti-militarist works of Marko Cheremshyna. It analyzes the distinctive features of the author’s individual style, the secrets of his mastery of short stories, and his ability to harmoniously embody the dialectic of tradition and innovation in anti-militarist prose within both Ukrainian and global literary processes. The theoretical and methodological foundations of the article are based on the views of literary scholars who influenced Cheremshyna’s development (such as I. Franko) or studied his individual creative method (I. Denysiuk, I. Stef’yuk). The dominant research method is hermeneutic (in interpreting the eidological system of anti-militarist prose), while elements of the cultural-historical school are also applied (in observing the historical, national, and social circumstances surrounding the creation of the body of anti-militarist short stories), along with reception aesthetics (in exploring the expressive impact of anti-war works on the reader).
The research reveals the secrets of Marko Cheremshyna’s mastery of short stories, particularly in his skillful combination of the genre-compositional potential of the short story with the expressive possibilities of the poetics of expressionism and naturalism. It concludes that the significance of the writer’s anti-militarist prose lies in its synchronization of the advanced innovative trends of Western European short stories about World War I with the traditions of the national literary process.
The scientific novelty of the article is connected to the attempt at a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the body of Cheremshyna’s anti-militarist short stories as a cohesive and significant phenomenon in the history of early 20th-century Ukrainian and world literature. The research is the first to focus on the stereometric identification of the author’s individual features, the national color, and the international relevance of Cheremshyna’s anti-militarist prose.
The practical significance of the research lies in its potential use in scientific studies and educational courses dedicated to the issues and artistic methods of depicting anti-militarist prose in world and national literature, the individual style of Marko Cheremshyna, and the genre capabilities of the short story combined with the poetic potential of realism, naturalism, and expressionism.
