THE MEANS OF THE COMPLICATING SENTENCE MODALITY IN MARKO CHEREMSHYNAʼS NOVELS

Abstract

Aim. The article analyzes the syntactic means of expressing modality in Marko Cheremshynaʼs short stories. Modality, expressed in the Ukrainian language at the morphological (grammeme) level and represented by the category of mood, is the basis of the predicativity of the sentence and forms a three-component semantic structure together with the categories of personality and temporality. However, the modality of the sentence is not limited only to the category of mood, but is subject to complication and appears as a communicatively determined system of means – modal syntaxeme. At the same time, the means of explicating the modality of the sentence are a characteristic feature of the authorʼs idiostyle, in particular such an original one as Marko Cheremshynaʼs. The purpose of the article is to establish and characterize the key means of complicating the modal structure of the sentence as special elements of Marko Cheremshynaʼs authorial style.

Methods. The key research method is descriptive. During the analysis of the modal structure of the sentence, the method of component and transformational analysis was used. Contextual analysis ensures the establishment of horizontal and hierarchical connections between syntactic units. The determination of the most noticeable authorial means of modal complication of the sentence in the texts of short stories was provided by the quantitative and comparative analysis of the studied units.

Results. Based on the analysis of syntactic means of complicating the modality of a sentence, it was established that the key ones are interjections, constructions-appellatives and modal exclamations and particles. It was determined that the author uses specific dialect-colloquial modal syntaxes, which are marked by a wide range of modal semantics, are multifunctional and provide stylistic marking of the author's texts.

Practical significance. The research material presents a typology of syntactic means of complicating the modality of a sentence in the texts of Marko Cheremshinaʼs short stories, provides a more complete study of the category of modality, in particular in syntactic expression, qualifies the author's modal syntaxes as elements of style and means of implementing the speaker's communicative-modal intentions.
